Ingredients
  

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon garlic minced
  • 2 ½ cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce
  • 1 cup yellow onions diced
  • 1/2 cup red bell pepper diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 fully-cook smoked turkey leg removed from bone and diced
  • sea salt & cracked black pepper add as needed
  • 2.5 pounds turnips greens washed & cut
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • liquid smoke 4-8 splashes

Instructions
 

  • Begin by melting butter in a large stockpot over medium heat.
  • Add onions and red peppers to the pot.
  • Cook until they are tender, add garlic, and cook until fragrant and golden.
  • Next, stir in the chicken broth, hot sauce, red pepper flakes, and diced smoked turkey.
  • Taste the broth and adjust the seasoning with salt and black pepper as needed. The broth should be flavorful and delicious.
  • Allow the broth to simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Add the turnip greens to the pot and let them cook down slightly.
  • Stir well, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  • After an hour, remove the lid and taste the broth again to adjust the seasonings, adding more salt, black pepper, and hot sauce if desired.
  • Stir in baking soda and liquid smoke to further reduce any bitterness.
  • Cover the pot again and simmer for 10-20 minutes or until the greens are tender to your liking.
  • Serve the soulful dish hot and enjoy its comforting flavors.
